Damon Albarn Slates Simon Cowell

It's all about the rubber duckie

Blur singer Damon Albarn has slated Simon Cowell in a bizarre rubber duck referencing rant.

Pop music isn’t the formulaic, industry led musical form many take it for. At its best, pop can be as challenging, transcendent and euphoric as any other art form, pushing back boundaries and topping charts.

In the hands of Simon Cowell, though, this can be difficult to believe. ‘The X Factor’ has reduced pop music to sales figures and demographics, and Blur singer Damon Albarn has clearly had enough.

Probed by MTV, the singer was unimpressed by Simon Cowell’s vision of pop music. “I really don’t want to share his imagination” he stated.

“He’s endlessly looking at a rubber duck just floating from one side (of a pool) to the other, pulling his trousers up a little bit more, someone bringing him a drink, and then it goes back again.”

“That’s his kind of imagination, and I feel I deserve a little bit more than that. So all the music that comes out of that entire culture, that’s what I think of it.”

Meanwhile, Damon Albarn has been celebrating the release of Blur’s first new single since 2003. ‘Fool’s Day’ was released as part of Record Store Day, and almost immediately sold out.

Fans queued across the country to snap up the seven inch, limited to just 1000 copies. Already selling for vast sums on eBay, Albarn left the band behind to play Coachella with Gorillaz.

The cartoon pop collective played a major slot at the desert festival, becoming one of the few British groups to make it through the volcanic ash.
