Daft Punk have spoken about the classical music inspired soundtrack to ‘Tron: Legacy’.
Daft Punk don’t tend to do things by halves. Taking their ‘Human After All’ album on tour the band had an entire operating system coded for them, allowing them to take dance music to new heights.
For their soundtrack to ‘Tron: Legacy’ the duo decided to hook up with a ninety piece orchestra. Inspired by classical music, the result is one of Daft Punk’s most ambitious projects to date.
Due to be released next month, ‘Tron: Legacy’ is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Breaking cover, Daft Punk spoke to Dazed & Confused about the making of their lavish soundtrack.
Recounting their influences, Thomas Bangalter explained that classical music loomed large in their mind. “The soul and emotion of it is so powerful,” he said. “A Stradivarius … will live for a thousand years.”
“This is what Daft Punk would have done in 1700,” he continued. Daft Punk, he claimed, were attempting to imagine a “wholeness” between “the analogue and the digital”.
Daft Punk have always had a cinematic element, releasing their own film ‘Electroma’. Using influences from the 80s, the duo have surprised fans by suddenly delving into the world of classical music.
Thomas Bangalter explained that the duo knew from the beginning that ‘Tron: Legacy’ would require a different sound. “We knew from the start that there was no way we were going to do this (soundtrack) with two synthesisers and a drum machine,” Bangalter said.
“A cello was there 400 years ago and will still be here in 400 years. But synthesisers that were invented 20 years ago will probably be gone in the next 20.”
‘Tron: Legacy’ is set to be released next month.
