Cymande and Jazzie B align on new cut ‘How We Roll’.
The legendary UK group are on something of a roll, with a celebrated documentary helping to illuminate their incredible story. New album ‘Renascence’ is out on January 31st, and it takes Cymande into some fresh spaces.
Working with BRIT winner Celeste, new single ‘How We Roll’ presents another collaboration from the group.
Soul II Soul founder Jazzie B was part of the rare groove generation, and his DJ sets helped to introduce clubbers to Cymande’s music for the first time. As a result, ‘How We Roll’ is a perfectly natural union, with the elastic bass line underpinning an urgent message of social consciousness and Black uplift.
Cymande’s Patrick Patterson comments: “The idea of the rap originated with me. Ray [vocalist] worked a lot with Jazzie B in Soul II Soul, so he got in touch with Jazzie and asked him if he’d like to consider collaborating. Lovely man. Big fan of Cymande, and he’s also in the documentary. The track talks about us and our brethren, our people, our community…”
“…it talks about taking control of your own destiny,” continues bassist Steve Scipio. “One of the lines on the song is ‘we control the page’. A song harking back to the old Cymande – a strong vocalisation of the issues that affect Black people. It’s my favourite bassline on the album.”
Tune in now.
