Irish riser Cruel Sister has shared new song ‘Chihiro’.
A real force, the songwriter – real name Faith Nico – does everything herself, from writing the lyrics to the final mix. As she puts it, it’s the only way she can reach the sounds she desires, and it results in a forceful originality.
New song ‘Chihiro’ is online now, the title echoing the magical character from Studio Ghibli’s classic animation Spirited Away. Opening with shoegaze ambience, the textured effects then give way to a song that pivots from idea to idea, its pinball creativity echoing those early PJ Harvey releases.
Discussing the song, Cruel Sister – whose name is lifted from ancient folk song ‘The Twa Sisters’ – comments on the lingering impact of Studio Ghibli on her work…
“I remember the first time I saw it, I think I was like 8 or 9, I had never seen anything like it. There was something so terrifying but also so exciting about the world Chihiro enters, and all the brave things she must do to save her and her parents’ lives even though she was just a kid like me. It was a massive influence on me as a person and I would watch it every week way back when you could borrow DVDs from Chartbusters and Xtravision.”
A full video for ‘Chiciro’ is online now, an exploration of claustrophobia and the dream-like sub-conscious mind directed by Ruth Hodder.
