Cribs Out-Selling The Beatles

Wakefield group outdo Fab Four

Returning Wakefield indie group The Cribs are currently outselling The Beatles in this week’s album charts.

The Cribs returned this week with their new album ‘Ignore The Ignorant’. The band’s first new album in two years the record is their first with new member Johnny Marr – one the axe slinger in The Smiths.

Previewing the new material with a British tour earlier this year, ‘Ignore The Ignorant’ was recorded in Portland, Oregon and is perhaps The Cribs finest album to date.

Released on Monday (September 7th) the new album is engaged in an unusual chart battle. The Cribs are fighting The Beatles in the British album charts, with both acts selling well in this week’s countdown.

The Beatles re-issued their studio albums on Wednesday (September 9th) and copies are flying off the shelves. As things currently stand, the best selling Beatles album is ‘Abbey Road’ followed by the ubiquitous copy of ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’.

Fans queued around the corner at HMV’s flagship store in London’s Oxford Street, but it seems even this might not be enough to knock The Cribs off their perch.

“It seems bonkers right now,” Gary Jarman told the NME. “Even talk of charts like that, it’s humorous to us really. I never thought we’d be in this situation. But it’s fine, doing a lot of it on your own. It’s something the band did organically, that’s the coolest thing.”
