Essex five piece Courts soared into 2015, becoming one of Zane Lowe's last ever Next Hypes on Radio 1.
With summer approaching, the band have decided to take things down a notch. One step deeper, new single 'Sanatana' is hazily addictive and shrouded in hidden meaning.
Out now – purchase LINK – it's a breezily infectious summer hymn, while the lyrics nod towards Eastern mysticism. Speaking to Clash, Courts explained a little more:
This track was actually written over two years ago, so from starting it off to the release it's been a pretty long process. Like 'Part Of', a tune we put out recently, its one of the first songs we wrote where we really felt like we'd hit on something in terms of sounding like ourselves.
The initial idea came from the chords you first hear when the track begins and it all stemmed from there really. The writing process is generally pretty natural so if something isn't working we normally scrap it and move on. Without sounding too cliché, 'Sanatana' wrote itself, like most of the music we make, it sort of just happened.
We took the name from 'Sanātana Dharma', which means 'the eternal path/order'; it's basically an alternative name for Hindusim. The whole idea behind it seemed pretty fitting because the verses are mainly about a conscious evolution we believe is happening on the planet at the minute. The chorus is what it is, 'change is for the better regardless of whatever' – the 'whatever' being the shit we have to go through while we all try to make our way in life.
'Part Of', explored the emotion of trying to stay positive, 'Sanatana' goes on to look at why it is we need to remain in that mindset to allow ourselves to continue in the right direction. It all links.
To us the track sounds like early evening in summertime. It's almost as if 'Part Of' was the party during the day and 'Sanatana' follows on from that when everyone's winding down and chilling as the sun goes down. We've tried to reflect that in both sets of artwork as well.
