The charts are, of course, far from a decent barometer of aesthetic endeavour.
Once in a while though, the countdown can produce some intriguing surprises, some fascinating stories.
This week’s is a good example. According to the Official Chart Company, Leonard Cohen’s new album ‘Popular Problems’ is at number three, a wonderful return from the Canadian artisan.
alt-J are at number one with new album ‘This Is All Yours’ but an unlikely figure is hot on their heels.
Just a few thousand sales behind, Aphex Twin’s new album ‘SYRO’ could snatch an unlikely number one. Currently at number two, the all important weekend sales have yet to be counted.
Already, though, Richard D. James looks likely to claim his highest ever chart placing. Quickly leafing through the records, his previous best seems to be ‘Selected Ambient Works Vol. II’ at number eleven.
