Connan Mockasin is set to release his second album 'Caramel' on November 4th.
Connan Mockasin is thoroughly out of step with modern life. An artist, the New Zealand born musician has flitted in and out of the music industry countless times, with its focus on regulation and profit sitting at odds with his own, rather purer, ambitions.
Debut album 'Forever Dolphin Love' was released back in 2010, with its psych-pop whimsy sitting a world apart from his contemporaries.
Since then, Connan Mockasin has toured widely, but new material has been thin on the ground. Suddenly, though, everything seemed to click into place. Recorded across the period of only a few days in a Tokyo hotel room, new album 'Caramel' marks the singer's return.
Seemingly inspired by the taste and smell of caramel, the new LP is a concept album… of sorts. "The concept is that it's actually an album" he explains. "It starts with the dolphin (from the debut album) leaving, and the boss (the man) who is so in with love with the dolphin is sad, and then it kicks into the new album, and he is happier. But there's a car race and a crash…"
Seemingly more influenced by classic soul and electro-funk than the psychedelia of his debut, 'Caramel' retains elements of his wide-eyed troubadour poise. Fusing the two, Connan Mockasin joked: "Prince goes to Canterbury, that’s a good one!"
'Caramel' is set to be released on November 4th. Tracklisting:
