Coldplay seem to be hitting a real melancholic streak, recently labelling themselves a “shit Radiohead”.
Returning with their new album ‘Mylo Xyloto’, Coldplay’s are adjusting to world fame. A chart success across the globe, the record delighted their millions of fans while a full tour is set to kick off early next year.
However it seems that there is one group of critics Coldplay’s cannot escape: themselves. The band have made a number of critical comments about their own music, beginning at an intimate London show.
Performing at the Little Noise Session in London, Coldplay played a number of their hits alongside material from ‘Mylo Xyloto’. Speaking to fans, Chris Martin said: “We had to settle on being shit Radiohead. We’re called that sometimes, you know.”
A charity fund raiser, the (no doubt tongue in cheek) remarks were followed by an interview with Q. Probed about his rising stature, Chris Martin explained that Coldplay was very definitely a group project and cast doubts on his own musical ability.
“I’d just be terrible. I don’t think I could even get a gig in Butlins — and I’ve been to Butlins” he explained. “I think me and my keyboard would be outside Woolworths most days, getting shouted at.”
Continuing, Chris Martin reflected on the attention afforded to him by the media and how that effects his band mates. “They’re very good friends to me because they know that, as the singer, and especially because I’m married to Gwyneth Paltrow, I get eight times as much media as them. They know how much I need them, I just couldn’t do it on my own.”
