Coldplay have entered the charts at number one with their new album ‘Mylo Xyloto’.
One of the biggest bands on the planet, few acts can stand in the way of Coldplay. The British giants returned with their new album ‘Mylo Xyloto’ earlier this week, notching up massive first day sales.
The group sold more than 120,000 copies on the first day of retail, one of the highest first day figures of any release in 2011.
Last week’s number one Noel Gallagher was pushed aside, with Coldplay taking pole position in the mid week chart. The band have held onto the number one slot, battling off competition from the former Oasis lynchpin.
‘Mylo Xyloto’ has been named the new number one, with the Official Chart Company placing Coldplay at the top. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds fall to number two, with the collective’s self-titled debut album dropping one place.
Joking about the chart win, Chris Martin commented: “We’ve never knocked Noel Gallagher off anything, not even a chair!”
Noel Gallagher was able to fight off competition from Michael Buble, with the jazz crooner’s festive album ‘Christmas’ entering the charts at number three.
Further down the chart, Adele fell out of the Top Five. Cancelling her upcoming British tour, it’s been a bad week for the soulful singer after she revealed that she must undergo surgery on her throat.
Postponing all public appearances, Adele’s ’21’ has slid out of the Top Ten. A fixture on the charts since its release back in January, the album looks set to be crowned the best selling of 2011 – unless Coldplay can fight back…
Elsewhere, Tom Waits hits number 10 with his new album ‘Bad As Me’. The legendary songwriter’s first new studio album in almost a decade, ‘Bad As Me’ has been rewarded with near unanimous praise.
Finally, Justice have made the Top 40 with their long awaited second album ‘Audio, Video, Disco’. Indebted to 70s classic rock and Italo Disco, the new record is the band’s first full length in over five years, entering the charts at number 35.
