Clinic Overhaul Ann Peebles’ R&B Classic ‘I Can’t Stand The Rain’

It's an intriguing cover...

Liverpool psych crew Clinic have shared their take on Ann Peebles' classic Southern soul tune 'I Can't Stand The Rain'.

A peerless slice of early 70s R&B, 'I Can't Stand The Rain' remains a perennial touchstone of Southern soul – especially after Erykah Badu sampled it to such fine effect on 'Baduizm'.

In the hands of Clinic, however, it turns into something much more transformative, and transgressive.

Harnessing the rock-solid rhythm, the song then pivots on their effects, the dank, murky arrangement thriving on suggestion.

The cover is a key element on their new album, with 'Fantasy Island' attempting to subvert the gloom of 2k21 life.

The band's Ade Blackburn comments…

"We thought it would make a nice change to record a cover version. The pro-sunlight lyrics of Ann Peebles' 'I can't stand the rain' fitted well with the exotic theme of our 'Fantasy Island' album. It's a bit of fun and gave us a good excuse to dig out plenty of sound effects!" Emily Evans directs the video, with Clinic summing it up as “a heartbreaking yet supremely uplifting cover of the Ann Peebles classic”.

Tune in now.
