CHVRCHES’ Lauren Mayberry On Internet Trolls

Singer takes part in extremely interesting Channel 4 interview...

Earlier this month CHVRCHES' debuted the video to their track 'Leave Every Trace'.

Due to the autobiographical nature of the song, the shoot placed Lauren Mayberry at the forefront. When the clip emerged online, however, it was met by some extreme misogynistic comments by the users of 4Chan.

Lauren Mayberry tweeted a link to the appalling discussion, alongside the message: "Dear anyone who thinks misogyny isn't real. It is and this is what it looks like."

Last night (August 28th) the singer sat down with Channel 4's Cathy Newman to discuss misogyny online and in society in general. It's a genuinely fascinating conversation – a former journalist, Lauren Mayberry's opinions are engaging throughout even if the content matter is, sometimes, sadly quite disturbing.

While Lauren realises that she attracts such horrible commentary because she's in the public eye, the singer contends: “this happens to women all the time anyway, and I hate the idea that young girls who follow our band deal with stuff like that. I don’t want them to feel isolated, I don’t want them to feel like it is just happening to them, because it happens everywhere.”

Realising that policing online commentary could lead to some uncomfortable places, the singer argues that we need “a shift in the cultural approach to women, and that will take time.”
