Channel 4 Series Music Nation Returns

Featuring niche, grime, bhangra and the Glasgow School of Art...

Launched earlier this year, Music Nation saw Channel 4 and Dazed join forces to focus on some of the most vital moments in modern British youth culture.

A second series has been commissioned, and – if the initial details are anything to go by – it looks pretty damn enticing.

Launching on November 5th, the opening episode finds renowned photographer Ewen Spencer focussing on the grime scene. Getting to the heart of the matter, the crew have obtained insights from Dizzee Rascal, Kano, JME and more.

The second episode is titled Sheffield Bassline, and draws attention to the seminal Niche club. A nightspot which spawned a fertile and intensely local sound, Toddla T is amongst those speculating on its impact.

Sadly damaged in a fire earlier this year, the Glasgow School of Art sits at the centre of Music Nation's third episode. An important conduit for international arts, the series will focus on the building's habit of throwing up influential musicians – everyone from Orange Juice to Franz Ferdinand and Frightened Rabbit owe a debt to the institution.

Finishing with the tale of British bhangra during the 90s, Music Nation tells an oft overlooked story – the astonishing growth of the Asian rave scene in the shadow of mainstream culture.

Jonny Rothery, Channel 4:

"Music Nation is a rare opportunity for new directors to create films for TV which cover subjects that other broadcasters don’t. Each film looks at a unique time in British music. If you were there first time it serves up a fantastic dose of nostalgia, if not, they are simply fascinating films about coming of age, set to a great soundtrack."

Music Nation (Series 2) launches on November 5th.
