Cat Power Talks New Album

Chan Marshall to play every instrument

Cat Power singer Chan Marshall has explained that she intends to play every instrument on her new album.

Cat Power is more than a Chan Marshall solo project. A band in its own right, Marshall is the sole constant member and has frequently gone it alone to record her stark anthems to alienation.

However in recent times Chan Marshall has relished being a singer. On ‘The Greatest’ Cat Power expanded again, this time into perhaps the most coherent and professional incarnation of the band.

Since then, Cat Power have recorded a covers album allowing Chan Marshall to stretch her pipes around material from James Carr, Bob Dylan and more.

Now working on their new album, Cat Power singer Chan Marshall has indicated that the time has come to go solo once again. The band performed at the recent 21st birthday party for Matador, with the singer confirming her intentions to record a new album.

“I’m working on a new album and I’m trying to play all the instruments myself,” Marshall told Rolling Stone.

“There’s an inspiration in being furious that you want to achieve your goals. I think I was inspired by being disappointed in myself that I’d just been holding the microphone and I was disappointed in myself that I hadn’t been playing an instrument,” she explained.

“I think I wanted to prove to myself that I could try to create a relationship with it (playing an instrument) again and feel like I felt close to it. It’s definitely there and it’s a need (for me to play), but it hasn’t been around.”

Cat Power last released an album in 2008, with their covers collection ‘Jukebox’. Since then, Chan Marshall has worked extensively with charity projects including a high profile trip to India.

There is no release date for Cat Power’s new album.
