Cass McCombs has gathered some unreleased work from his formative years on a new compilation.
The songwriter recently re-issued some key EPs through 4AD, and now returns to Domino for this absorbing new compilation.
Out now, ‘Seed Cake On Leap Year’ features 10 tracks, recorded during the songwriter’s stay in Berkeley. Part of a blossoming movement of DIY musicians – peers included Papercuts, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Chris Cohen’s Curtains, and Mt. Egypt.
A formative period in his life, the new 10-tracker sifts through his tapes, focussing on songs recorded between 1999 and 2000.
Recorded at Jason Quever’s apartment at 924 Fulton in San Francisco – the two would become close collaborators – it makes for fascinating listening, the sound of an artist working uninhibited by expectations.
Out now on streaming, a CD / vinyl edition lands on November 8th, and is available to pre-order now through Domino Mart.
Tune in now.
