Caribou Talk Psychedelic Roots

Canadian producer speaks to ClashMusic

Canadian electronic producer Caribou has spoken about his love of 60s psychedelia.

It’s difficult to go on a trip with a laptop. Rooted in technology, electronica can often be the most grounded form of music around. However in the hands of Caribou – real name Dan Snaith – electronic music can take on aspects of head swimming electronica.

With his new album ‘Swim’ causing ripples of excitement amongst fans, Caribou has spoke to ClashMusic about his love of psychedelia – and his wariness about being stuck with a 60s tag above his head.

“The frustrating thing for me last time around was that ‘Andorra’ was more about writing the songs rather than arranging them,” he says.

“People heard it and thought for some reason that I was a Sixties guy – I didn’t really want people to be thinking that I was just one of those retro guys who wanders around in bell bottoms. I didn’t want to end up in this Sixties psychedelic ghetto.”

Continuing, Caribou explained that he was conscious of this when working on his latest album. “It was important for me with ‘Swim’ that I could write the songs in the same way, but keep the production independent to the writing of the songs – the musical ideas can be whatever they want but I wanted the sonic environment to be my own sound so it’s hard for people to ask where it fits in.”

“That’s why I’m really happy with it, because it feels like it’s just me.”

‘Swim’ is out now with Caribou releasing their track ‘Odessa’ as a free download. To grab your copy simply click HERE!
