Canadian electronic maverick Caribou has spoken about his introduction to club culture, and the effect this has had on his music.
Real name Dan Snaith, Caribou have built a cult following with his surreal psych-pop. Always containing electronic elements new album ‘Swim’ makes these more explicit, at times feeling more at home on the dancefloor than ever before.
Now living in London, it seems that Caribou has been drawn into the city’s dense network of clubs. In a new interview the producer reveals that he has been absorbing dance music on a much deeper level than before.
Speaking to Pitchfork, the producer explained that he has been attending many more club nights recently. “I have been in the last couple of years” Snaith explained.
“I guess just because I’ve met more people who are dance-music producers or whatever, and I’ve just been more interested in dance music in the last few years. I’ve just tended to go more clubs then I’ve gone to gigs, and have been DJing more in the last year or so than I have in a while.”
Elsewhere, Caribou explained the differences he has experienced when living in London. Born in Canada, the highly educated producer moved to the UK in order to study almost ten years ago.
“Initially I came to do my PhD. Somebody described it as being an acquired taste, living in London” he explained. “Most people just hate London and the UK more generally, but there’s something exciting about how difficult and annoying it is to live here. It’s got that kind of buzzy excitement of big cities in general.”
Caribou’s new album ‘Swim’ is out now.
