Butcher Brown’s ‘Tidal Wave’ Is An Emphatic Fusion Of Jazz And Hip-Hop

It's a heavyweight return...

Richmond, Virginia outfit Butcher Brown are a self-contained sonic universe.

Demolishing the lines between jazz and hip-hop, they let the two forms intermingle as club entities, a free-flowing conversation between eras.

New cut 'Tidal Wave' follows their acclaimed Camden Session in 2018, and it's out now on Concord Records.

The piece merges the Ronnie Laws fusion session of the same name from 1975 with Black Moon's seminal rap classic 'Who Got The Props?' – which, funnily enough, samples the Laws original.

Building on this telegraph line of inter-generational exchange, the track eases out into some fresh spaces, Butcher Brown comment:

“A nod to the OGs Ronnie Laws and Black Moon. Our example of how jazz and rap come from the same soul.”
