Burial has shared new two-tracker ‘Dreamfear’ and ‘Boy Sent From Above’.
The reclusive producer sent fans into a ruckus at the start of 2024, dropping hints that new material was incoming. Switching it up, Burial has opted to release through legendary stable XL Recordings, having previously developed a close relationship with Hyperdub.
Out now, ‘Dreamfear’ and ‘Boy Sent From Above’ feels like a fresh chapter from Burial. Both songs are lengthy electronic excursions, tethered to aspects of rave culture – XL Recordings, with its prominent 90s catalogue, feels like an apt home for these audio messages.
‘Dreamfear’ undulates between light and dark, the ominous vocal “I am the lord of ecstasy…” giving way to bursts of energy. Burial’s work of late has utilised lengthy composition, and this affords him space to tease out each aspect, infusing the directness with an exploratory nous.
‘Boy Sent From Above’ feels a little different. The rave framework remains, but it’s a little darker, more unsettling; the extended middle section breaks the song down, dissolving the heady production into a bath of electronic murk.
Laced with detail – Reddit is going to have a field day working out these samples – ‘Dreamfear’ b/w ‘Boy Sent From Above’ is out now.
