Reclusive dubstep producer Burial has collaborated on a new mix with Kode9 especially for Mary Anne Hobbs.
Perhaps more than any other single media figure, Mary Anne Hobbs has pushed dubstep into the mainstream. Sure, the music would have reached there anyway but the Radio 1 presenter gave the scene some much needed exposure.
Hosting the epochal Dub Warz show back in 2006, Mary Anne Hobbs brought the nascent scene to the nation’s airwaves. Since then, the presenter has been a notable evangelist for dubstep, and electronica in general.
Stepping down from her Radio 1 show, Mary Anne Hobbs prepared something special for the final instalment. Hyperdub boss Kode9 prepared a farewell mix, and was joined at the control by Burial.
Shrouded in mystery, the producer’s fractured post-garage is amongst the most influential electronic music completed in the past decade. Stepping out of the shadows, Burial helped to curate a very special mix.
Opening with Speedy J the pair moved between full on dubstep, classic garage cuts and even the odd grime plate. Including Theo Parrish and Prince along the way, Kode9 and Burial really do catch something special with their mix.
Finishing with A Guy Called Gerald’s ‘Silent Cry’ Kode9 published the full tracklisting on his Twitter. A 34 minute mix, you can hear the mix on the BBC website.
Meanwhile, Kode9 is set to play a special Burial mix at Club To Club. Spread between Italy and Turkey the festival appearance prompted widely reported rumours of a new album from Burial.
However in a typically forthright statement the Hyperdub boss ruled out any new material from the reclusive producer.
