Portugese dance mavericks Baraka Som Sistema have returned to their roots with a sizzling new mixtape.
The world seems to have given in to bass culture recently. Here in Britain, hotspots such as Brixton and Bristol are reverberating to the sub-bass inspired activities of the dubstep scene, but things don’t stop there.
Over in the United States Diplo and Switch have driven a huge swathe of bass into the Florida dance scene no their new project Major Lazer. In African and South American producers have blended local rhythms with bass advances, to produce something deeply physical.
Portugal seems to sits at the centre of it all. Buraka Som Sistema began life as DJs, rocking the house with a mixture of euphoric house, dancehall and the latest productions from Africa. Lisbon is by nature a city based on immigration, and the group seemed to reflect that.
Beginning to craft their own productions, Buraka Som Sistema soon caught the imagination of switched on clubbers across the globe. The band recruited a number of star guests for their debut album ‘Black Diamond’, released last year to no small amount of acclaim.
Live, Buraka Som Sistema are simply incredible. A mixture of a live performance and a soundsystem the group blur the edges between bands and DJs in a flurry of bass driven noises.
Now the group have decided to go back to their roots with a stunning new mixtape. Revealing their influences, ‘Blood Diamond Mixtape’ is also not afraid to include the odd guilty please.
Pointing the way to future developments, the mixtape was conceived, mixed and produced by J-WOW aka DJ Lil’John. Now available as a free download, the DJ claims that it is “a different version of an album we would have made if clearing samples wasn’t an issue.”
Amongst the standout tracks on the mix are Jaime Foxx’s version of ‘Kuduro’ and Afrikan Boy’s take on album track ‘Kalemba’. Mixing Shirley bassey with Zomby, ‘Black Diamond Mixtape’ will cross any boundary to get the party started.
