American songwriter Bruce Springsteen has come out in support of same sex marriage ahead of a new bill in his hometown of New Jersey.
Bruce Springsteen has long mixed the personal with the political. Yet for the songwriter parties and movements rarely come into play – The Boss seems to believe in people politics.
From Vietnam veterans to victims of AIDs Bruce Springsteen has always spoke up for those pushed to the fringes of society, battling prejudice and mis-conception. Recently rewarded by President Obama in a ceremony at the White House, the singer has proved in a new statement that he remains unafraid of tackling controversial issues.
New legislature in New Jersey could allow the state to sanction same-sex marriage. The issue is a hot topic in the United States following the state of California’s decision to repeal the rights of homosexual couples to marry.
Widely debated, the issue is one of the most contentious and emotive in American politics. In a statement Bruce Springsteen has outlined his views thus:
“Like many of you who live in New Jersey, I’ve been following the progress of the marriage-equality legislation currently being considered in Trenton.”
“I’ve long believed in and have always spoken out for the rights of same sex couples and fully agree with Governor Corzine when he writes that, “The marriage-equality issue should be recognized for what it truly is—a civil rights issue that must be approved to assure that every citizen is treated equally under the law.” I couldn’t agree more with that statement and urge those who support equal treatment for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters to let their voices be heard now.”
The New Jersey same-sex marriage bill is set to be heard on Thursday (December 10th).
