British Sea Power Work On New Album

Recording sessions under way

Acclaimed British indie stars British Sea Power have begun recording their fourth album.

The Brighton based band have been working non-stop since the release of ‘Do You Like Rock Music?’ in 2008. Hailed by some as their finest work to date, it showed a new muscle to the band’s sound and was rewarded with a nomination at the Mercury Music Prize.

British Sea Power watched as their profile soared, with the band playing numerous tours of the UK to packed out audiences. However that hasn’t prevented them from working on new music, notably composing a score to the British film oddity ‘Man Of Aran’.

That soundtrack can perhaps be regarded as a sort of companion piece to ‘Do You Like Rock Music?’ but it seems that the band have begun to work in earnest on a full scale follow up.

In an interview with NME guitarist Noble revealed that “work on the new album is coming on pretty good”.

“We’ve got about 15 songs on the go, we’ve bought loads of equipment and we’re recording all ourselves at our own Pheasant Studios, and then Graham Sutton, who mixed our last album, is first choice to mix the new one.”

He added: “We hope to have it all finished song-wise by the end of July and hope to have it completely finished before the year is out, so it’s released before the end of next year. Where we’re recording has got a good atmosphere, it’s a farmhouse out in the country in Sussex. It’s about an hour north of where I live in Brighton. So we just go out there for a few days and work on stuff.”

The musician also claimed that the group had found an unusual source of inspiration. “I think there’s one song about Rick Stein. I haven’t asked (singer) Yan why, I think he just likes him,” said Noble. “Yan takes a while to come up with the lyrics. He starts off singing any old thing then gradually the lyrics come. He’s going into that stage now.”
