The Brian Jonestown Massacre are to return with new album ‘Aufheben’ on May 7th.
Let’s get this out the way first: there is a lot more to The Brian Jonestown Massacre than ‘DiG’. As good as that documentary is, the film shouldn’t over shadow the Californian psych outlaws’ sprawling back catalogue.
A back catalogue which – come May 7th – will be one LP larger. Borrowing a German word which means ‘abolish’ or ‘preserve’, ‘Aufheben’ was recorded in Berlin.
Leader Anton Newcombe seemingly lives in the city, with his studio using the space vacated by the infamous East German Radio Station ‘Studio East’. The Brian Jonestown Massacre have a continually fluctuating line up, and will line up as: Matt Hollywood (an original member of the band), together with Will Carruthers (Spacemen 3, Spritualized), Constatine Karlis (Dimmer), and Thibault Pesenti (Rockcandys).
New cut ‘Blue Order New Monday’ has emerged online… and d’ya know what? It’s great. A fantastic, Eastern tinged pop hymn with strings that seem to recall The Go! Team this is one of the most accessible Brian Jonestown cuts to emerge in some time.
