Reports are emerging from the United States which suggest a new film about The Beatles manager Brian Epstein could be in the pipeline.
Brian Epstein helped revolutionise the music industry. Discovering The Beatles in a sweaty club in Liverpool he helped launch a pop phenomenon. Through his strict control of the group he was able to present rough and ready rock ‘n’ rollers as the Fab Four – lads your mum would like.
However beneath his huge business success lay a tortured and divided soul. Homosexual at a time when that was illegal in Britain he was also addicted to prescription drugs, dying of a lethal overdose in 1967.
Since his death Brian Epstein’s role in The Beatles’ success has been much discussed. But the historical analysis should probably give way to Sir Paul McCartney assessment of his one time manager, who he named ‘The Fifth Beatle’.
Now it seems that Epstein’s life is set to be turned into a new movie. ‘A Life In The Day’ has been written by Tony Gottelson and will be produced by David Permut.
Variety magazine reports that the producer is currently in the process of securing the rights to songs by The Beatles. In an interview with the magazine Permut claimed that the film would concentrate on the initial formation of the band – which, intriguingly, took place before Brian Epstein has ever heard of them.
Of course, The Beatles have been immortalised in film before. The Fab Four released countless movies, and their music was used in the animated film ‘Yellow Submarine’. Due to be re-made in the digital era, the cult film has a popular place in the public’s view of the 60s.
‘A Life In The Day’ has yet to begin shooting.
