US artist Brandon has unveiled a new EP ‘Blush’, his first since signing with Secretly Canadian.
‘Blush’ sees Brandon respond to recent stimuli in his life; the four-track EP was recorded just a few month prior to release. “There are songs on my next album that I wrote in 2018,” Brandon says. “They still feel true to me, but their meanings have changed over time. These feel so immediate. I’m really proud of them.”
Born to Trinidadian parents and raised by his single mother in Riverside, California, Brandon’s early releases – most notably 2020’s ‘Coming Clean‘ – were signifiers of an earthy, unvarnished style. ‘Blush’ is Brandon assuming form; he wrote and recorded every song and every instrument. ‘Blush’ contains four folk-rock reveries, and together they offer up an evocative snapshot of a quiet, but no less powerful, unfurling of love in its interior and universal guises. Taking playful cues from Joy Oladokun, Bon Ivor, and Sampha, Brandon’s voice glissades between tempos and moods on songs that unabashedly celebrate joy and contentment.
Speaking about ‘Blush’, Brandon shares “for me, it’s some of my most honest music to date, and sonically, feels like a glimmer into a new epoch. Each song has its own story, and moves with you on this short, 16 minute journey. It encapsulates a lot of the feelings and sentiments that have eclipsed my life over the past year. I hope it brings people as much peace of mind as it has brought me.”
Brandon’s forthcoming debut album is expected to drop in 2025. For now, the EP provides a snapshot of the current moment – “a nighttime whisper before a bright, airy dawn.”
