A new list of the gayest albums ever made has placed David Bowie’s classic “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars” at the top, it has been revealed.
The 1972 album topped a poll conducted by Out Magazine, who asked over 100 actors and musicians to name their favourite ‘gay album. Aside from Bowie, The Smiths appeared in the list twice – with “The Queen Is Dead” and “The Smiths”.
Aside form naming their album, each person surveyed had to reveal what made it great and of course what made it ‘gay’. Bowie’s androgynous appearance as Ziggy Stardust was an undoubted factor, while Morrissey’s gender ambiguous lyrics (and “The Smiths” sleeve) probably swayed some minds.
The magazine said of Bowie’s album “it’s ironic that an album with an opener forecasting Earth’s expiration and a closer tackling celebrity excess and self-destruction remains one of the most liberating, uplifting records of all time – about as ironic as a straight man topping this list.”
Of course, a list like this is merely conjecture and it is impossible to place gender on top of an artwork – in the same fashion as you can never really identify music as either ‘black’ or ‘white’. However its been fairly amusing watching the lads in the office scramble around checking their record collection, and denying they like any of the albums. Calm down, chaps!
