Returning American maverick Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy has launched a new video backing his track ‘I Am Goodbye’.
The singer is renowned as one of the most challenging songsmiths around, but his new album is ambitious even by his own standards. A long, sprawling work it is a measured exploration of human relationships that takes in a variety of influences from American folk to avant garde classical music.
A strikingly honest album ‘Beware’ uses a vast roll call of guest musicians. The studio band included top session names such as Josh Abrams, Jennifer Hutt, Emmett Kelly and Michael Zerang. Among the guests who popped by were Dee Alexander, Leroy Bach, Jim Becker and Robert Cruz.
The American singer last released a studio album earlier this year. ‘Lie Down In The Light’ was a typically thought-provoking set, which was shortly followed by the live set ‘Is It The Sea?’. Recorded while on tour in the UK, the live album was a very intimate affair that put down on tape a unique tour that paired the singer with a variety of top British folk musicians.
The new video was inspired by a track from ‘Beware’ titled ‘I Am Goodbye’. A breath-taking example of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s unique songwriting style, the song was a highlight of the album which was released last week.
