A tape featuring a lost concert by Bob Dylan is set to be released later this year.
Bob Dylan’s ‘Bootleg Series’ is deeply cherished by fans. In an attempt to out manoeuvre illegal tapes, the singer gathered together some of his long lost recordings and released them with spruced up sound.
The result is a lengthy series which gives greater insight into his work. Returning with Vol. 9 later this year, fans who purchase the set online will receive a long lost Bob Dylan concert from 1963.
Recorded at Brandeis University’s First Annual Folk Festival the tape was thought lost until earlier this year. Set to be released alongside ‘The Bootleg Series Vol. 9’ fans can purchase the live set only on Amazon.
The tape lay in the archive of Rolling Stone co-founder Ralph Gleason, whose son Toby discovered the concert. Speaking to the American magazine, Toby Gleason explained how the discovery was made.
“It had been forgotten, until it was found last year in the clearing of the house after my mother died,” he said. “It’s a seven inch reel-to-reel that sounds like it was taped from the mixing disc. A collector/dealer associate of the family said ‘This might be worth something to the Dylan office’ and we sold it to them last year.”
As for how his father obtained the tapes, Toby Gleason remains uncertain. “I suspect he got the tape from Bob himself or from one of the people in Bob’s organization. My father was one of the nationally credited writers that wrote about Bob the most, and they became close.”
The new concert won’t be available in stores, but will be boxed with copies of the ‘Mono Recordings’ box set or the new Bootleg release.
The short live set opens with ‘Honey Just Allow Me One More Chance’ and is mainly centred on the ‘Freewheelin’ album. Ending with ‘Talkin’ Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues’ it is one of the earliest complete concerts to be made available.
Bob Dylan is set to release the new instalment of The Bootleg Series on October 18th.
