Blur are set to meet up over Christmas and could potentially work on new material.
At their height, Blur were one of the most in demand groups in the country. Instantly recognisable, the band were under enormous pressure with millions of watching eyes following their every move.
So forgive them is they decide to take a more leisurely tack. Reforming in the summer of 2009, Blur have taken their time before announcing their next move – meeting up every now and again to catch up and make music.
Speaking to the NME, bass player Alex James revealed that Blur are planning another catch up over Christmas. “We’re getting together for a Christmas drink next week which is nice. We still see each other all the time, more since we were all living out of a suitcase.”
Continuing, the bass player confirmed: “We’ll probably record again.”
Since their reformation, Blur have only issued one track as a special Record Store Day release. Planning to record new material, Alex James appeared to cast doubts over whether this would appear as an album.
“Is there such a thing as an album? Does music have to come 12 tracks at a time?” he asked. Later the bass player said the re-union would be like “getting The Blues Brothers back together.”
Reflecting on Blur’s success, Alex James doubted if the music industry could support a younger version of themselves. “I don’t think Blur would be signed if they were around today. It’s a shame, but you can’t really be in an indie band these days. You can’t really be in Half Man Half Biscuit or Crispy Ambulance today, you can’t make any money.”
Now a cheese farmer, Alex James has been linked to the so-called Chipping Norton set whose number includes Jeremy Clarkson. Probed about the presenter’s recent declaration that public sector works on strike should be shot in front of their families, Alex James appeared ambivalent to the ‘joke’.
“I think he’s really funny and says what he’s thinking. I wish more bands would say the unsayable. He’s sort of the best rock star we’ve got.”
