Sources close to legendary Britpop outfit Blur have suggested the band could release more new material in the future.
Blur’s reformation last year was as sudden as it was welcome. Playing a series of huge events the band delighted thousands of fans by rushing through seismic hits alongside some extremely rare tracks.
Calling time on the re-union to focus on their own projects, Blur are nonetheless set to issue new material in time for Record Store Day. Due for release on April 17th, the forthcoming single contains previously unheard material.
Sparking rumours of a permanent reformation, Blur’s label boss has suggested that the band could be set to record more new material.
Parlophone Records president Miles Leonard told 6Music it was “an absolutely wonderful summer tune. I think it encapsulates all the sum of the parts of that band,” he said.
“They sound as competent and as strong as they’ve ever sounded before.
“At this point we were just really pleased to hear that they wanted to go in and record this. And who knows, from the reaction to this song, what will come in the future. I just hope that from hearing a song like this that the band feel there’s more in them. We certainly do as a label and I’m sure when fans hear this they’ll think the same.”
The single has only been heard by a handful of people, with Miles Leonard claiming that the track is up there with Blur’s best material. “Graham’s guitar lines just sound so simplistic and easy, and Alex’s bass lines just drift through the track, very groove-based. And Damon’s lyrics are as poignant as they’ve ever been.”
“There’s personal comment and social comment within the song – this is something very special and I think the Blur fans out there are going to absolutely love what they hear.”
