Celebrated Americana merchants Blitzen Trapper are set to (ahem) blitz fans with a new EP and a British tour.
More than twenty years on from its inception, Sub Pop has again become one of America’s pre-eminent labels. The grunge boom may have swelled the coffers, but the Seattle imprint has rarely been so influential.
The Shins scored the label’s first ever number one album, while local group Fleet Foxes became one of last year’s surprise success stories, bagging a Brit Award nomination in the process.
One of the label’s newer signing are Blitzen Trapper, yet this hides a long musical apprenticeship. The band formed in 2000, and released three albums through the tiny label Lidkercow.
Snapped up by Sub Pop the band were sent back into the studio and responded with last year’s sublime ‘Furr’ album. Scoring critical plaudits it turned Blitzen Trapper into a bona fide cult phenomenon.
Blending a variety of Americana influences, Blizten Trapper recall the likes of Wilco and Neil Young yet have their own distinct songwriting voice. Never ones to rest on their laurels, the band are set to release a new EP in August.
Containing a handful of tracks from ‘Furr’ the band have also included some rare songs that were previously only available as CDR’s sold at live performances. ‘Black River Killer’ is a superb introduction to a career that has already lasted nine years and shows no signs of stopping.
In addition to this, Blitzen Trapper are set to head over to the UK for a series of live dates. The band are due to support Wilco on a number on dates before heading out under their own steam.
