Atlanta flower-punks Black Lips are set to release a batch of new material later this year.
Black Lips are one of the most controversial rock groups on the planet. Chased out of India by irate authorities the band are famed for their pop bitching, sparking a bar room fight with Wavves (which they lost).
2009’s ‘200 Million Thousand’ was a huge success, finding the band ploughing their psych-rock furrow to critical acclaim. Black Lips seem to have perfected a noise-drive brand of psychedelia, and fans can expect more of the same on their forthcoming fifth album.
Taking time off to record new material, Black Lips are due to release their fifth album later this year. Speaking to American magazine Billboard Ian Saint Pe revealed: “I’m hoping we can get the record out by the end of summer… September-October when school gets back in. That’s my prediction.”
Black Lips have taken time out of recording to go on tour across North America. The Atlanta band have been working on new material with Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox and Lockett Pundt, who have been attempting to channel their noise rock tendencies.
“I’m already digging what we’ve got,” he explained. “I’ve read reviews where people say we haven’t changed, but, man, the wheel ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
“We do what we do. It’ll sound like a Black Lips record; I can’t say much more than that. It’s got garage stuff, punk stuff, a little of that Atlanta hip-hop. It’s just who we are. I think it sounds good.”
Black Lips are already playing some new tracks live, with ‘Raw Meat’ becoming a fan’s favourite.
