American flower punks Black Lips are amongst the acts contributing to the soundtrack for Carlos Cuaron’s film ‘Rudo Y Cursi’.
Black Lips are one of the most sensational live acts on the planet. Their 2007 album ‘Good Bad Not Evil’ made the band cult heroes, but the subsequent tour pushed the boundaries of what was considered acceptable rock ‘n’ roll behaviour.
A recent jaunt to India opened with optimism within the group, however Black Lips’ enthusiasm soon faded. Met with disgust by the audience, one show ended in the group fleeing from the stage amid a hail of cans and rocks.
At a later show the band kissed and cavorted onstage. The authorities then questioned the group, who almost immediately fled the country amid claims they were threatened by gun toting police.
Of course, that’s all in the past now and the band will bring their inimitable touch to Carlos Cuaron’s forthcoming epic. All songs on the soundtrack will be covers of regional Mexican classics, and will also feature the likes of Devendra Banhart, Juana Molina and many more.
Black Lips’ effort is a cover of ‘Árboles De La Barranca’. Released digitally on May 5th, the soundtrack album looks to be quite the cult classic in waiting.
The band are set to head to the UK shortly, to play what promises to be a very special show. The Sheffield leg of Black Lips’ upcoming tour has been transformed into Roller-palooza, a quirky concept that places the band in an old roller disco with support groups and DJs.
One of the more bizarre ideas we’ve heard, Black Lips’ live show has to be seen to be believed.
Black Lips will play the following live date:
May
16 Sheffield Skate Central
