Black Keys vs Carl Barat

"He looks like a prick".

Blues two piece The Black Keys have admitted they loathe artists who care about their image.

The blues comes with certain associations. Blue collar, working class, tough are all phrases you could lay at the door of the 12 bar. However ‘fashionable’ has never really been a part of the blues singer’s vocabulary.

The Black Keys are no exception. The band’s stripped down anti-image involves albums with no cover art and videos where nothing happens – the last thing on their mind is coordinating an art director with a stylist.

Speaking to The Guardian, The Black Keys were probed about their lack of any definable image. “We’ve just so never given a shit about image, and generally hate people who do,” said Dan Auerbach. “There’s nobody Pat wants to punch in the face more than Carl Barât, you know.”

For his part, drummer Pat Carney insisted that he was only “making fun” of the former Libertine. “Aw, I’ve been making fun of Carl Barât all day” he admitted. “He looks like a prick, but he reminds me of how I thought I was coming off when I was 23. A dude, y’know.”

In town to support their new album ‘El Camino’ Black Keys are also looking ahead to a UK tour in February. The band’s live show is of course where the magic happens, with so much of the duo’s popularity stemming from their ability to kick out the jams.

Excessive demand has forced The Black Keys to announce a second date at the Alexandra Palace on February 9th. The duo’s initial show at the historic venue sold out within a few hours.

Opening with a show in Nottingham on February 3rd, the band’s UK tour also includes a night in Edinburgh and two shows in Manchester.
