Bjork Prepares New App

'Solstice' gains festive update

Bjork is set to release a new version of her ‘Solstice’ app upgraded for the festive season.

One of the year’s most ambitious project, ‘Biophilia’ wasn’t merely a studio album. Sure, Bjork had been working on new material but ‘Biophilia’ went beyond this – moving from performance to recorded music, visual arts to computer apps.

With Christmas fast approaching, Bjork has chosen to end the year with typical grace. The Icelandic singer is preparing to release an updated version of her ‘Soltice’ app with a festive twist.

‘Solstice’ was initially inspired by a poem written by author and previous Bjork collaborator Sjon. Comparing the solar system to a Christmas tree, the Icelandic singer gave the poem a musical setting for ‘Biophilia’.

The new app expands on the solar system image. The ‘Solstice’ app features the sun at the centre of the screen, with the user able to pull out ‘strings’ and form the solar system.

Transformed into a harp, you can play a tune or simply the device and watch the image transform into a 3-Dimensional Christmas tree.

Bjork recorded ‘Solstice’ on a specially commissioned pendulum-harp which focussed on the themes of gravity running through the piece itself.
