Billy Corgan Pavement Rant

"We have the love"

Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan has slated Pavement for reforming without new material.

The current glut of re-unions shows no signs of abating. In the past week Pulp announced their intention to play a series of live dates, while Liverpool Britpop kids Cast are beginning work on a new album.

Reforming last year, Pavement’s return was celebrated by indie fans across the globe. A lengthy tour has seen Malkmus & Co. trawl through the vaults, re-visiting some of their classic back catalogue.

However not everyone is a fan. Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan recently ranted on Twitter about being booked to play the same festival as the California band, who have ruled out writing new material.

“Just found out SP is playing with Pavement in Brazil. It’s gonna be 1 of those New Orleans type funerals… I say that because they represent the death of the alternative dream, and we follow with the affirmation of life part…” he said.

“funny how those who pointed the big finger of ‘sell out’ are the biggest offenders now…yawn. they have no love… by the way, we’ll be the band up there playing NEW songs because we have the love xx”.

Oh dear. Pavement explained from the outset that they would not be writing new material, while the issue of new songs remains contentious with Smashing Pumpkins fan base.

On tour last year, Smashing Pumpkins were dogged by complaints about their new material, with some fans walking out. The grunge group battled back, and began to release unheard tracks online earlier this year.

Pavement have yet to reply.
