Ayrshire rockers Biffy Clyro have revealed to ClashMusic that they worked with American singer Beck’s father on their new album.
Biffy Clyro have come a long way. Forming at a music course in Glasgow the trio worked hard, playing shows across the nation while continuing their studies.
Becoming cult heroes, Biffy Clyro released three albums which showed their progression as songwriters. However it was the personal nature of 2007’s ‘Puzzle’ which transformed the Ayrshire group into chart breakers.
Since then, they have played stadium shows with Muse and The Rolling Stones as well as breaking into the Top Ten singles chart (twice).
Returning with their new album ‘Only Revolutions’ the band spoke exclusively to Clash recently, revealing that among the guest stars on the forthcoming record is Beck’s father – David Campbell.
“That was one of the most exciting things we heard about him early on,” James Johnston enthuses. “It wasn’t a case of Beck being his son it was the fact that he’s Beck’s dad.”
Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil added “I know, how mental is that? Of all the things he’s done (including winning an Oscar for scoring Brokeback Mountain) and we’re more obsessed with him being Beck’s dad.”
“He was such an unassuming guy though and at the same time he’s probably one of the most musically creative composers we’ve ever met. Everything he added and suggested with strings and brass on the album was incredible.”
The band also revealed how they place themselves under pressure. “We don’t listen to our record much once other people hear it” says Simon Neil. “We just try and mentally move on and start thinking about songs for the next record. I think that’s how we manage to avoid a lot of pressure because we always try and move on in a period when people are actually talking about the album.”
