It’s Grammy nomination time. Which means tussling over which zeitgeist artists are recognised and which artists are snubbed by the arbiter of musical excellence, The Recording Academy.
This year, Beyoncé leads the pack with a staggering eleven nominations, scoring noms for the first time in the country and American roots categories. The Texan extends her career total nominations to a record-breaking 99, overtaking none other than Jay-Z.
Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Charli XCX and Post Malone received seven nominations apiece, Taylor Swift secured six, whilst Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan notched five nominations in their maiden Grammy breakthrough year.
The aforementioned Charli XCX alongside Jacob Collier, for ‘Brat’ and ‘Djesse Vol. 4’ respectively, will contest the Album of the Year category alongside André 3000 and his instrumental work ‘New Blue Sun’, ‘Cowboy Carter’ by Beyoncé, ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’ by Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan’s ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’, Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Short n’ Sweet’ and Taylor Swift’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’.
UK artists prevailed with nominations across multiple categories. Raye continued her takeover with recognition for Best New Artist and Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical. Idles notched nominations for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Album. First-time nominees Fontaines D.C. were nominated in the same category alongside a nom for Best Alternative Music Performance. Disclosure, Four Tet and Fred Again.. (with Baby Keem) were nominated in the Dance/Electronic categories.
The 67th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony, with awards chosen by the members of the Recording Academy, will take place on February 2nd 2025. It honours the best recordings, compositions, and artists from September 16th 2023 to August 30th 2024.
