Beth Orton Enters Youtube Row

Singer affirms importance of royalties

Award winning singer Beth Orton has entered the recent row involving Youtube, and has re-affirmed the importance of royalties.

The singer recently released her best selling album ‘Trailer Park’. A subtle mix of folk and electronica, it has lost none of its charm in the decade since it first hit the record shops.

Video hosting site Youtube was negotiating with the Performing Rights Society when talks broke down. Citing unreasonable terms from the PRS, the website removed all premium content.

In a new interview with BBC 6Music Beth Orton claimed that royalties were a fundamental means of paying artists for their music.

“Certain people can’t just make money from gigs, can they?” she said.

“You should get money from recording, because record deals are different now as well, so it would make sense that revenue has to come from somewhere. It’s been lovely for me because I’ve had the last two years to just concentrate on my little girl” the singer added.

“That’s been from working really hard for 10 years and then being able to live off the back of what I’ve done when those little royalty cheques come in.”

Negotiations between Youtube and the PRS are ongoing.
