Beth Orton is set to release her new album ‘Sugaring Season’ through Anti on October 1st.
A shy, softly spoken artist Beth Orton was never quite equipped to deal with her own success. Albums such as ‘Central Reservation’ won widespread plaudits and scaled the charts, pushing the songwriter into an uneasy relationship with the mainstream.
Always a deeply independent artist, Beth Orton recently fell silent. Working on new material, the songwriter is now ready to make a break with new album ‘Sugaring Season’ due for release this year.
Her first full length statement in six years, ‘Sugaring Season’ promises to be a typically idiosyncratic return. “I stretched myself as a singer on this record and used voices I never have before as a writer,” she explained recently. “A lot of the writing on this record happened in the dead of night, when spiders mend their webs, with an infant asleep in the next room… as a result, my writing became a secret again: illicit and my own.”
Shifting away from the electronic textures which permeated her early work, ‘Sugaring Season’ is seemingly much more acoustic in focus. “It may not be a ‘dance’ beat,” she argues, “but it’s definitely there and it’s earthed and primal and insistent.”
Out on October 1st, the tracklisting for ‘Sugaring Season’ runs as follows:
1. Magpie
2. Dawn Chorus
3. Candles
4. Something More Beautiful
5. Call Me The Breeze
6. See Through Blue
