Beth Gibbons has shared new single ‘Reaching Out’.
The Portishead singer is an enigma – rarely engaging with the press, rarely performing live, yet still capable of outstanding music. Perhaps the most emotionally engaging vocalist of her generation, Beth Gibbons will release new solo album ‘Lives Outgrown’ – her first release of any kind in over 15 years – on May 17th through Domino Records.
New single ‘Reaching Out’ is a bravura performance, typically enchanting from an artist who has long since built her own lane. Connecting to the broader currents within the album, it deals with middle age – grief, experience, and fading memories.
“I realised what life was like with no hope,” says Beth. “And that was a sadness I’d never felt. Before, I had the ability to change my future, but when you’re up against your body, you can’t make it do something it doesn’t want to do.”
The video is a work of art in its own right. Constructed with Weirdcore – responsible for iconic clips with Aphex Twin and Arca – there’s a static version, and a fully interactive 4D rendering.
The video features Beth freefalling through a sci-fi landscape, the singer moving through different phases in her life as she does so.
