Alt pop wunderkind Beck is underfire in the US, as American protesters have taken issue with the star’s belief in Scientology.
The controversial belief has many very vocal critics in the US, as well as a host Hollywood believers including Beck, Tom Cruise and the late Isaac Hayes. Campaigners reportedly gathered outside the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in New York last night (September 18th), during a performance by Scientologist Katie Holmes.
The protesters held up a series of banners including “Run, Katie, Run! And Take Beck With You”.
Scientology was founded by the late L. Ron Hubbard in 1953, and is one of the fastest growing systems of religious belief in the world.
While Beck is a well known Scientologist, he has not been forthcoming in spreading his beliefs. Growing up in a family where Scientolgy was the norm – his artist father believed in the religion for 35 years – Beck has only rarely chosen to comment on the religion, and only confirmed his involvement in 2005.
Beck released his latest album “Modern Guilt” earlier this year.
