American slacker icon Beck is set to cover Sonic Youth’s album ‘EVOL’ in its entirety for a new box set.
Beck has gone covers crazy. Earlier this year the songwriter released his take on the Sonic Youth track ‘Green Light’ for a split seven inch, with the singer due to follow this with a series of Velvet Underground covers.
Beck announced plans to cover ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’ earlier this month. Recorded with no rehearsal in just one day, the singer has already posted a ramshackle version of ‘Sunday Morning’ on his official site.
More is set to follow, with the singer due to release a track once every fortnight. Beck set to invite others along for the ride, with many names being mooted as possible collaborators. In a new interview with American magazine Pitchfork the songwriter reveals that he wanted to work on Ace Of Base covers with Brooklyn space cadets MGMT.
It seems that Beck isn’t finished there. The cult songwriter has apparently been working on an entire album’s worth of covers. Taking on Sonic Youth’s 1986 classic ‘EVOL’ Beck has begun reworking the album in his own unique style.
Due to be released on cassette, Beck’s take on ‘EVOL’ will form part of a new Sonic Youth box set. “They are doing some kind of box where they are getting artists to do photographs and art and pamphlets related to Sonic Youth, and one of the things they were requesting was a cassette.”
“So I signed up for the cassette. I thought it would be an interesting idea, at least, something that’s on cassette.”
Sonic Youth have yet to confirm news of the box set.
Elsewhere in the interview, Beck discusses a possible collaboration with French singer Charlotte Gainsbourg. The daughter of legendary lover Serge, a new album has been recorded although the singe admits he does not know when it will be released.
“We started it about last spring, last year, and we’ve been working on it off and on. We finished that a couple months ago.”
