American songwriter Beck has added to his series of pretty cool downloads by launching a new mix series.
Beck is a busy man right now. After overhauling his website the ‘Odelay’ singer felt that a bit of experimentation was in order. Launching his ‘Record Club’ Beck set about covering some of rock’s finest albums.
Tackling ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’ first, in the future Beck plans to involve some superstar friends including MGMT. With two tracks available right now, Beck has added a surreal, ramshackle element to one of indie rock’s core texts.
Not content with this, Beck has also volunteered to cover a Sonic Youth album in its entirety for a new box set. A good friend of the group, the songwriter is set to tackle the band’s 1986 album ‘EVOL’.
Also on the schedule: production duties with Charlotte Gainsbourg and of course his own album, the follow up to 2008’s ‘Modern Guilt’.
However in order to fill all the free time he has (two minutes or so?) Beck has decided to launch his own DJ series. Titled Planned Obsolescence, the series will involve a weekly set from Beck and some star buddies.
Beck issued a statement to describe the project. “We are putting up a new section, a weekly DJ set, called Planned Obsolescence. These are mixes of what we’re listening to, put together by myself or guest DJs. Please enjoy.”
The first mix is called ‘Autobahn Hologram’ and is pretty out there. But then, with Beck at the controls we were never going to get four-to-the-floor bangers. The would be DJ describes the mix as “a laminated miasma colliding on the bavarian trans expressway with american analog and voicemail emeritus… alabama nukes, rhineland jukes, pony tailed arch dukes, and the anatomically correct scapegoat…”
Containing Pharoah Sanders, Kraftwerk’s ‘Autobahn’ and much more, the DJ mix is a fascinating glimpse at Beck’s record collection.
