Beck has interview legendary songwriter Tom Waits in the first of a new series of conversations due to be published on his website.
Beck has gone web crazy recently. Updating his website the inventive songwriter has unveiled a series of exciting new features. The ‘Odelay’ singer announced a new series of free downloads, in which he and a variety of friends cover classic albums.
Beginning with ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’ the singer will update fans with a new download every fortnight. In addition to this Beck has become a selecta after introducing a new mix series.
Containing his favourite tracks of the moment, the new mixes are set to be an ongoing series. In a sensational new move Beck has begun a new feature on his site, which will feature regular conversations from some legendary musicians.
Beck has opened the interview series with a rare chat with Tom Waits. Waits very rarely gives interviews, despite the critical praise lavished on his work. The secretive artist is set to give an entertaining interview, holding fort on topics such as the history of Los Angeles as well as disastrous gigs.
According to Beck the series will be known as ‘Irrelevant Topics’ and is designed to allow artists to discuss “various subjects, without promotional pretext or editorial direction.”
At one point Beck waxes lyrical about Los Angeles…
“I think of the city as a sort of mirage. If you look at pictures of the city a hundred years ago it’s just a bunch of weeds and desert dust. Its not really supposed to be here. I was always fascinated by the city it was meant to be.”
“I guess it was a place created by developers. It’s not really like a city where some people roam around and then they find a good piece of land, and then they test it out for a while and make sure there is water so they don’t die, and then they decide to make a city.”
“I started looking at some pictures…Beverly Hills was originally supposed to be called Morocco Junction. I started thinking, if they’d gone with that name we’d be in a whole other situation. I was wondering if there were any things that you remember? It seems like it’s shed its skin so many times.”
