The Liverpool Hope University is set to offer students an opportunity to study the influence of The Beatles.
The Beatles may have released their first single well over 45 years ago but their towering influence over popular culture is still being analysed. With books on the Fab Four still being written, Liverpool Hope University has taken things a step further an offered a course in Beatles-ology.
The new masters degree analyses popular music within society, with particular reference to The Beatles’ relationship with their home city of Liverpool.
Course leader Mike Brocken told the BBC: “There have been over 8,000 books about The Beatles, but there has never been serious academic study.”
“The Beatles influenced so much of society, not just with their music, but also with fashion – from their collar-less jackets to their psychedelic clothes.”
“Their output covered a huge range, from the black and white film ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ to ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’, which was accompanied by arguably the first pop video.”
“Forty years on, now is the right time and Liverpool is the right place to study The Beatles. It is definitely the first Beatles-related MA in this country, and I would say probably the first in the world.”
