Radiohead’s innovative approach to promotion for their ‘In Rainbows’ album continues to catch the eye, almost a year after the online version of the record first emerged.
Their latest venture is a worthy departure from the usual method of video-making, as the band have hooked up with MTV EXIT to cook up a new film for the track ‘All I Need’.
EXIT – End Exploitation and Trafficking – is a far-reaching campaign raising awareness of the enormous problem of human trafficking in Asia and the Pacific region, an industry raking in 10 billion dollars every year according to US government reports. The new video, filmed by Oscar-winning cinematographer John Searle and award-winning director Steve Rogers, uses a split-screen and Thom Yorke’s emotive vocal to highlight the variances between two very different lives.
One side depicts a typical day for a child from an affluent, developed area, the other shows the travails of a child forced to work in a sweatshop. It isn’t an easy watch, but then Radiohead have never been easy listening.
“The video is a powerful piece and I hope that the emotion of the song will jump out at people in the context of these images of exploitation,” said Thom Yorke. “I’m proud that the song and the video will help to raise awareness of this issue around the world.”
The band’s involvement with EXIT continues into their forthcoming tour, as each date will see youth activists from local anti-trafficking organizations distribute key information about their work, following a similar concert collaboration with REM.
