Listening figures for BBC 6Music have had a massive leap since the start of the year.
Currently under threat, BBC 6Music is at the centre of a tug-of-love between Auntie Been and its listeners. At present under review, the station is the focus of a high profile fan campaign to save it.
Based primarily online, the campaign seems to be working – at least in one respect. Issuing a ‘use it or lose it’ ultimatum, the number of people who have been listening to the station online has risen dramatically.
According to the BBC, the site has leaped by more than 50% over the course of a year. Data from the station suggests that more than 130,000 people listened to 6Music online in March, compared to 88,000 last year.
With some of the biggest names in music lining up to try and save the station, the news will come as welcome relief to fans. BBC 6Music logged some 1.6 million live listening hours during March – far more than Radio 3.
Safe from cuts, the classical station’s listening figures are in decline with some in the industry complaining of double standards.
Meanwhile, fellow under threat station the Asian Network saw its figures leap as well. Facing the chop, the number of listeners visiting the station online rose by more 33% year on year in the month of March.
