Battles have spoken to ClashMusic about the creative process which lay behind new album ‘Gloss Drop’.
With singer Tyondai Braxton departing, some feared the worst for Battles. Always capable of flying off in different directions, the avant rock collective seemed to be in the process of tearing itself apart.
However out of this Battles have emerged a stronger, fitter beast. Stripped down to a three piece, the group have completed new album ‘Gloss Drop’ with the aid of guest vocalists such as Yamantaka Eye from The Boredoms and Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead.
Speaking to ClashMusic, John Stanier mused on the band’s creative process. “The narration of our songs is very natural,” he explained. “Our songs tend to take on a life of their own from the very early stages.”
“A ‘seed’ idea in the beginning might give off an obvious vibe, but once everyone gets their hands on it the end result is very often totally different than the suggested route.”
